I first met her at a workshop retreat at Wintergreen Studios in South Frontenac - a 4 day workshop with Patrick Lane. She had participated in Lane's workshops before, and told me how he pulled words and memories out of her, that she didn't really particularly want to explore, but were defining moments for her. She shared a little bit of her history with me - some unpleasant episodes - Patrick made you dig deep and if you didn't - he wasn't interested. Lesley was an incredible individual and I was thrilled when she joined the League and attended their conferences. She will be missed by so many people. She never talked about all her accomplishments just about the work itself, ideas and encouraging others. She was thrilled to become a Full Member of the League of Canadian Poets last year, and I just wish we had more time with her in that role. She'd probably be the next President, she was so smart and warm and creative and wonderful with people. Lesley is someone I will not forget, and her kind and loving and smiling face is vivid in my mind. I will write a poem for you, Lesley, when my sadness has moved out from the shore and I can see you sailing in the sun on the waves. There's an old song we sing in our family when partings come. The first lines are "Fare thee well, love go with thee." With thee, Lesley.<br />Susan McMasterSusan McMasterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13089172279110149319noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12600583.post-9086673902663392332021-02-07T13:36:03.680-05:002021-02-07T13:36:03.680-05:00sorry, that should have said Canadian Authors Asso...sorry, that should have said Canadian Authors Association.ceeesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14733669790324579886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12600583.post-11321099661476944022021-02-06T16:20:12.339-05:002021-02-06T16:20:12.339-05:00Indeed. That would be around 2007, I think. Back then she had an unruly mass of small curls, a cloud around her face, and always, always a smile, a quick hunch of shoulders, and a mischievous grin. You couldn't help being drawn to her: she was the warmest, most upbeat person I think I've ever known. I remember working with Lesley and Rona Shaffran on the editing of our group's chapbook, Tangled Strands. A variety of poems about the challenges of hair. And I remember the readings Lesley curated at Tree Reading Series, under the blanket of Dead Poets, although some of them were still very much alive. I do believe that our spirits go out to the universe, still bright sparks of energy. That's where Lesley is, and what she will always be: a bright spark of energy waiting for us all to come home.
